Electrodeless lamp

In contrast with typical electrical lamps that use electrical connections through the lamp envelope to transfer power to the lamp, in Electrodeless lamps the power needed to generate light is transferred from the outside of the lamp envelope by means of (electro)magnetic fields. There are three advantages of eliminating electrodes:

Ø  Extended lamp life, because the electrodes are usually the limiting factor in lamp life.

Ø  The ability to use high efficiency light-generating substances that would react with metal electrodes in normal lamps.

Ø  Improved collection efficiency because the source can be made very small without shortening life - a problem in electrode lamps

Because of its excellent features, the lamp is a dream come true for the lighting designers, engineers   and the practitioners alike. It is a small wonder then that Induction lamp is rapidly replacing HPSV, HPMV and metal halide lamps all over the world. More than 4 million lamps have been installed spread over 60 countries. It scores even over LED lamps in terms of energy saving, CRI, life, thermal characteristics, light distribution and applications. The leading manufacturers are Shanghai Hongyuan (LVD), Philips, Osram, Amko Solara and Matsushita. In brief the main features are as under:

Ø  Super long life of 20 years at 12 hours /day burning.

Ø  Energy saving of 60% compared to HPSV, HPMV and Metal halide lamps.

Ø  Lumen depreciation < 10% in 40,000 hours.  Other lamps it is 25/30% in 4000 hours.

Ø  Quality of light is close to that of day light i.e. colour rendering index of 80 to 90.

Ø  Power factor of 0.99. For most other lamps it is poorer - 0.60 to 0.80.

Ø  Operates with constant light output between 140 to 270 volts.

Ø  Operates within temp. Limit of 80 deg cent as against 180 to 250 deg of other lamps.
